CBD is a compound found in cannabis that belongs to a group of compounds called cannabinoids. Some of these compounds are responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana, such as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that has several medical benefits that are only just now being explored as states across the United States continue to legalize cannabis for medicinal use.
In fact, according to research done in 2013 that was published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, CBD oil could have several potential medical uses to relieve symptoms of conditions like neuro-inflammation, nausea, anxiety, and schizophrenia.
1. Manage Anxiety
Recent studies have shown that CBD oil may be effective in helping to manage anxiety in patients that exhibit social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and even PTSD.
In 2011, a study was conducted where 24 patients with anxiety were given CBD or a placebo to determine the cannabinoid’s effect on their condition. Researchers discovered that patients who received the CBD oil reported reduced anxiety and more alertness in social situations. Those who were given the placebo had heightened anxiety and cognitive impairment in the same social situation of public speaking.
2. Helps Cancer Patients
Not only is CBD effective at helping cancer patients manage their pain, but studies also show that the cannabinoid could help inhibit the growth of cancerous cells. Research indicates that CBD oil may be useful in fighting breast cancer, leukemia, and even lung and colon cancer.
3. Manage Epilepsy Symptoms
CBD has also proven effective in helping treat seizures in patients with epilepsy. A study conducted in 2014 discovered that children who had previously tried seizure reducing pharmaceuticals but saw no reduction in seizure frequency actually saw a reduction in their seizures when taking CBD oil. After three months of treatment, 39% of patients saw more than 50% reduction in their seizures.
4. Relieves Pain & Inflammation
CBD oil has been proven to be useful in regulating pain and inflammation in patients by inhibiting neural transmission through pain pathways in the brain. A 2012 study discovered that CBD helped reduce chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rats without the animals building a tolerance to the substance, reducing its effectiveness. This can help patients with chronic painful conditions like multiple sclerosis lead a normal and healthy life.
5. Anti-Psychotic Effects
Other research shows that CBD oil may be valuable in helping schizophrenics and other patients suffering from neurological disorders to better manage their symptoms. In fact, CBD may be a safer alternative to some of the pharmaceuticals with harsh side effects that are currently in use to help patients manage these conditions.
The amount of evidence that showcases the benefits of CBD oil proves that it can help manage chronic painful conditions, but it is also useful for neurological conditions like schizophrenia and epilepsy. Therefore, it could become a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals with undesirable side effects and helps people with these conditions lead happier and less painful lives.
