7 Best Calming Teas For Anxiety

“You Can’t Buy Happiness, But You Can Buy Tea, And That’s Kind Of The Same Thing.”

For many centuries certain teas have been used to combat stress and anxiety, as well as headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues and more. Below I’ll share some of my own favourite calming teas for anxiety. When used as a sidekick to a CBT based program you have a winning formula for anxiety recovery.

  • Decaf green tea: Green tea is a great option for those who want to drink non-caffeinated teas for relief from insomnia and anxiety. Green tea is ideal for those who do not like the herbal flavor of some teas. It has numerous benefits such as bringing about a sense of calmness and relaxation. You can add some Manuka honey to green tea and drink a cup every day to help calm your anxiety.
  • Chamomile tea: One of the best calming teas for anxiety and for treating insomnia. Chamomile tea has been used over the ages for overcoming stomach upset, stress, and anxiety. It helps relax the nervous system and the muscles, and acts a mild sedative. I’ve personally used chamomile tea daily during my anxiety recovery (here’s the YouTube video of my story) , and found real benefits to consuming a cup a day.
  • Passionflower tea: This tea is known to calm down the body, decrease stress and anxiety, and offer the ideal relaxing end to a long tiring day. It’s important to make a strong passionflower tea brew to get the best calming effect. The taste can be overwhelming and it’s best to drink the tea slowly. Drinking slowly is perfect as it offers enough time for natural relaxation of the body and the easing of anxiety.
  • Peppermint tea: This is the ideal tea for anxiety sufferers who tend to experience increased tension in the muscles during an anxiety attack. Peppermint has natural muscle relaxing qualities and can easily relieve the tense energy in the muscles, leading to relaxation and calmness. this tea also has a really good aroma which you can slowly breathe in to double the calming effect. It can also help ease nausea in anxiety sufferers who experience nausea as a symptom of anxiety.
  • Valerian root tea: This tea promotes drowsiness and sleepiness and thus prevents the mind from thinking in anxiety-causing scenarios, eventually allowing the mind and the body to relax, calm down, and go to sleep. Valerian root tea also helps in the alleviation of the physical symptoms associated with an anxiety disorder. Since this tea causes drowsiness, it is best to drink it before going to sleep. Avoid drinking prior to driving somewhere.
  • Kava tea: Polynesian people have used kava root for calming down the body, mind, and soul for ages. Kava tea is made using kava-kava root and is quite potent and strong. It is very effective in the alleviation of adverse anxiety symptoms due to its strong sedative qualities. The kavalactones present in this tea are what cause the calming effect; so, it’s recommended to drink this tea with coconut milk as the fat present in the milk sucks out the kavalactones.
    • Kava has a direct effect on liver chemicals and hence should not be used by pregnant women and those with liver conditions. It should also not be consumed with other medicines or alcohol.
  • Lavender tea: Lavender tea has a great aroma and is one of the best calming teas for anxiety, and inducing sleep. It decreases blood pressure and heart rate which in turn helps ease anxiety. I also use lavender essential oils from time to time prior to sleep as the scent give my mind direct orders that sleep is upon us.

As most of you already know through my Facebook page and Instagram account I love tea. I experiment with many different teas and want too suggest that you pick up the actual herbs, and a tea ball for maximum benefit.

Enjoy your tea warrior.
