“This is the beginning of anything you want.”
Come New Year and everyone is thinking of resolutions. We end up making a list of resolutions, but forget all about it within a month or two into the New Year. One of the main reasons for our failure to follow through on resolutions is the fact that we are slaves to our habits and it is often very difficult to break old habits.
One of the ways in which we can look to change our habits is by changing the mindset. This will not only help us keep up with the resolutions but also provide a better outlook for 2017.
Presented below are certain ways in which we can change the mindset, which can then assist us in improving our lives.
It is one of the most important changes in mindsets that we need to inculcate for the year 2017. Setting goals helps us to work towards a future which is hopeful and bright. Setting goals is easy but following through on them can be quite problematic. This is because the daily routine and life just tends to take over and eventually dictates what the rest of the year will be like.
One of the ways to overcome this is by dividing the final goal into several smaller sub-goals. Try and accomplish a sub-goal every week; the cumulative of all of these sub-goals will finally lead to realization of the ultimate goal that you had set for yourself when the year began.
It may also be noted that completion of each sub-goal not only helps persist with the resolutions, but also sets the framework and the path towards the next sub-goal.
This is another aspect of the mindset that needs to be modified. Most of us usually do not take ownership of failures, etc., despite knowing that we did play a part in the outcome. Not taking ownership prevents us from growing as an individual and thus obstructs our path towards a brighter future.
When you own up to your mistakes, it allows you to think of newer and better ways to overcome issues, whether work-related or life-related! This leads to greater clarity and opens up doors to leadership.
Requirement Vs Choice
Changing the mindset from something being tagged as a requirement to it being a choice can also help make positive changes to life. For example, students can change their mindset from having to go to school (requirement) to getting the opportunity to go to school (choice). Thus, when going to school is thought of as a choice rather than a requirement, then studying for better grades, learning, etc., also becomes easier.
The same thought process can be applied to work, i.e., work is an opportunity to grow in life rather than a requirement to earn a living.
A few New Year’s resolutions that can help improve your outlook for 2017 are listed below:
Live a healthier life. Eat a balanced/healthy diet, begin exercising, quit smoking, etc.
Spend more time with family.
Think of you ‘getting to’ (choice) spend time with family instead of ‘having to’ (requirement). Start a new activity like painting, learning to play a musical instrument, etc. Couples can opt for a dancing class. Travel not for the sake of travelling, but to learn new things, cultures, etc.
